Snoring Has Been Linked to Brain Damage

May 29th, 2009

I thought this blog needed a fear mongering post on here, but fear might be a good motivator for you. Fixing this problem is something that can cause a lot of damages with people around you and now it has been linked to causing BRAIN DAMAGE in you.

Australian researches have found a change in the brains biochemistry when someone suffers from snoring and apnea that resembles a similar biochemistry to a person that had a severe stroke. That’s a scary thought isn’t it. A similar biochemistry as a severe stroke. If you don’t know what a stroke is, it’s when there is some sort of blood clot to the brain.

Scary scary stuff. Fixing the problem should definitely be a top priority. Check out some of the solutions I have posted about.

Here is more information from The Age:

Sleep apnoea sufferers who snore may be severely impairing their brain function, Australian researchers have found.

The changes in brain biochemistry linked to obstructive sleep apnoea have been compared to changes evident in people who have “had a severe stroke or who are dying“, researchers at the University of NSW Brain Sciences department have found.

“It used to be thought that apnoeic snoring had absolutely no acute effects on brain function but this is plainly not true,” lead author of the study Professor Caroline Rae said in a statement.

The impairment is thought to be the result of a lack of oxygen reaching the brain during extended pauses in breathing – a common characteristic of severe sleep apnoea.

Researchers studied the brains of 13 men with severe, untreated, obstructive sleep apnoea and found that even a slight lack of oxygen supply to the brain has an effect on function.

My Two Favorite Snoring Treatments

May 28th, 2009

A lot of people are looking for decent snoring treatments that they can start to use to help fix this problem, but really don’t know of any. I suppose that is tragic because there are a lot of solutions out there. I have used many in my time. Some of them ended up working, while others did not work. I’m going to create a little post here that can help you identify which one would work best for you and your particular situation.

The Tennis Ball

Basically people that snore are lying flat on their backs. This causes loose tissue to fall into the throat and the air that you breath in/out will cause this tissue to vibrate. It is this vibration that causes the sound of snoring. All you have to do to stop this type of snoring is just roll onto your side. This causes the tissue to fall to the side and out of the airways. Seems like a relatively simple thing to do.

Since you’re not conscious when you’re asleep, you can’t force yourself to remain on your side all night long, so you need something to support you. If you sew a tennis ball into the back of a t-shirt, this will make a perfect device. When you try to roll onto your back, the ball will be in the way and you’ll go back onto your side.

Chin Strap

The Chin Strap deals with another cause of snoring. Basically your muscles go loose when you’re asleep and this causes two particular things. First, your tongue will slide back into your throat area and secondly your jaw will fall loose, which causes your throat to constrict in size.

A chin strap is designed to hold your jaw upright, which allows your throat to expand in size and prevent this problem. Click here to learn more about it.

Snoring Burns More Calories

May 27th, 2009

Well, if there was a positive thing to post about snoring, it is that it has been linked to increased calories being burned while you sleep. You can view the news report on it here. If you would of told me that snoring can help you lose weight, I would of laughed at you.

Apparently what they did was measure people’s oxygen use and CO2 production, which is a very good indication of how many calories you are burning. Obviously if your body is working harder, it is going to need much more oxygen to function and that means it is going to produce more CO2. So monitoring these things gives a very good indication. The people that snore produce more of each and that is why you burn more calories.

On average, people that snore burn 23% more calories each day than those that do not snore.

It is important to note that this isn’t something you necessarily want to have though. The fact is that most people that are overweight will start snoring just by the pressure the extra fat puts on the body. It is an unhealthy thing and you shouldn’t have a goal of snoring. At least that’s the point I want to make.

Snoring Treatment With A Chin Strap

May 26th, 2009

I think everyone is looking for a snoring treatment but really don’t know what they can use to fix this problem. It’s a tragic issue that people are completely left in the dark when it comes to curing a relatively simple problem. Yes, snoring is a relatively easy snoring problem to solve because science has pin pointed the issue. We all understand that the sounds are produced in the throat area, but it is the jaw that leads to the change in the throat. This is where the snoring treatment will have to focus, that’s why I like the chin strap.

Snoring is a vibration of loose tissue in the throat, but what happens is that when the jaw goes loose it causes the throat to get a lot of pressure on it. This pressure causes a constriction and the air going through the throat will increase in velocity to get through it and that causes much more violent vibrations than what you’d experience while you’re awake (which is no snoring). Basically if you want to fix the snoring problem, you have to close your mouth. That is the ultimate snoring treatment and no one really knows about it.

The chin strap is designed to hold your jaw up as you sleep and prevent this from every occurring. I’m sure you’re well aware that you can’t force yourself to keep your mouth closed when you’re sound asleep, so the chin strap is a relatively easy and simple snoring treatment to take advantage of.

Interesting Facts About Snoring

May 25th, 2009

I thought it was about time that I finally did a post that was related to the facts about snoring because there is a lot of interesting things that you’ve probably haven’t heard before. I know I always find it interesting.

In Recent Years, the Jaw Has Been Linked to Snoring

I think we all know that snoring sounds come from the throat, but recently science is learning that it is the position of the jaw that changes the characteristics in the throat, so that you start to snore.

Men Are More Likely to Snore Because Of Their Neck

Both men and women are capable of snoring, but statistically men do it far more than women. One of the main reasons is that men have much larger necks. This leads to more pressure on the throat and cause the problem.

Women That Snore Tend to be Shorter and Heavier Than Those That Don’t

This is more proof that the less room that your body has available, the more pressure it puts on parts of your body, in particular your throat.

Most Snorers Don’t Realize They Snore Until It is Pointed Out

Well, people that snore are sound asleep, so you can’t really expect them to know that they’re doing it. Sometimes telling them can be the first step to them fixing it. They may be completely oblivious to what they’re doing.

Does Obesity Cause Snoring?

May 22nd, 2009

Obviously it does. The throat area is where the sounds of snoring are created. The tissue in their starts to vibrate and you get those sounds that you hear. The reason that this happens when you’re obese is that you end up getting a double chin. It is all this extra fat pushing in on your throat that leads to the problem. It’s an unfortunate side effect for being negligent with your health to begin with.

Obviously losing weight is about the best thing you can do to stop snoring. As you start melting the fat off your body, it will take a lot of the pressure off your throat and allow your airways to open up. It’s really quite simple physics, but the real issue is that losing weight takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work.

A Chin Strap should be able to help you out in the meantime. It will take you 6-12 months to lose any significant amount of weight and often you don’t want to have to wait that long. A chin strap is designed to help orient your jaw and this opens up your throat area automatically. The chin strap can also be effective if you’re really not interesting in losing weight. It’s unfortunate if that is the case, but I do understand that it takes a lot of hard work and a significant lifestyle change.

Snoring With Mouth Closed?

May 21st, 2009

Anyone that reads this blog knows that I’m a big fan of the chin strap. It holds your mouth open while you sleep, but you can see in this video that you can snore even with your mouth closed.

What people often miss is that the chin strap isn’t designed to close your mouth, but support your jaw and there is a big difference. If you watch the video you’ll see his mouth open, but his jaw is still loose. The muscles in his face have gone back to sleep and that causes the constriction in the throat that we know as snoring.

Specifically you need more than your mouth closed. You need the jaw held up in a closed position. It works the same way with one of those snoring mouth guards. The mouth guard doesn’t actually support your jaw, but when you have a mouth guard in your mouth you’ll feel the need to bite on it. It is this biting that causes your jaw to remain in an upright.

Anyway, back to the chin strap. Here is what you need to know. It holds your jaw up to a closed position. The closing of your jaw will cause the airways to expand in your throat and you completely avoid snoring.

That’s really all there is to this snoring solution and it works pretty effectively for those that want something quick and easy to use.

Are Ear Plugs Really Necessary For Snoring?

May 20th, 2009

If you’re lying in bed next to a snoring husband or a snoring wife, you’re probably looking for a way to not listen to this. Obviously you have two ways of achieving this. You can either fix their problem or limit your hearing ability. I find it funny that people will resort to using ear plugs just to avoid some show down with the person that is actually making the noise. Well, I suppose this happens because people don’t realize how easy it can be to fix this problem.

Confrontation can be tough, but really you should be able to solve this problem for them. The snoring can be stopped in as little as 5 seconds of their time, so you shouldn’t have a problem investing in a device that they could wear to bed.

When it comes to anti-snoring devices, the best that I have come across is the chin strap. This is a relatively simple device that is also known as a snoring headband and a jaw supporter. It’s really a smart device to get because it works effectively with snoring problems and it only requires a 5 second investment of time to put it on before you go to bed.

Give this device to your snoring husband or wife. Just tell them to put it on and they shouldn’t object to that because it’s just a small 5 second investment of their time. The easier it is for them, the more likely they’ll follow through with it.

Top 5 Ways to Stop Snoring

May 19th, 2009

A lot of people snore and most people don’t have the first clue on what they should. I thought I could give you 5 ways to stop snoring. That is 5 things that you can try and see how they go for you.

1. Sleep on your side

This is a relatively simple tactic that works quite well. Basically the reason that you snore is that loose tissue in your throat area falls into your airway. When you’re on your side, the tissue falls to the side and out of the way. This ends up relieving the snoring problem (as long as you stay on your side)

To help you stay on your side, try sewing a tennis ball into the back of your t-shirt. This way when you try to roll onto your back, the ball will be in the way and you’ll go back to your side position.

2. Lose Weight

I think it should be apparent that weight issues inevitably lead to a snoring problem. If you think about all the extra fat that is around your neck area, you will realize that it puts a lot of pressure on the throat area. The more pressure that you have in your throat, the more likely you’ll snore.

3. Avoid Alcohol

One of the main reasons that loose tissue gets into your airway is that your muscles are relaxed, but when you drink alcohol you cause muscles to relax even more. This causes more tissue to end up in the way and you end up with more vibrating tissue (snoring).

4. Follow a consistent sleeping schedule

Sometimes this is hard for a lot of people, but the benefits definitely help. If you go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning, you can greatly reduce the chances of snoring. I know that it isn’t the most desired thing on the weekends, but it is something worth looking into.

5. Snoring Chin Strap

Something as simple as a chin strap can greatly help you stop snoring. When your mouth is held close, it actually causes the airway in your throat to open up. So using this snoring device can greatly help.
