Youtube Video on Sleep Disorders

July 6th, 2009 Charles No comments

Every day, millions of Americans wake up to find themselves just as tired as when they went to bed. They are the victims of one or more of 84 different sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, which often results in heavy snoring, that keep either them or their loved ones from getting a good night’s rest.

Unfortunately, the problem is more than just a lot of noise, as Robert Capone, MD, medical director of the Sleep Disorder Center of Morristown Memorial Hospital, explains in this online video on Johnson & Johnson’s official YouTube Channel. Sleep apnea and other disorders can result in high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes and obesity as well.

At the Sleep Disorder Center of Morristown Memorial Hospital, sleep apnea makes up the bulk of the sleep disorders we treat. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 24 percent of men, nine percent of women and two percent of children have sleep apnea. However, about 80 percent of those who suffer from sleep apnea go undiagnosed.

Physicians and sleep technologists at the center can monitor sleep patterns and determine what disorder a patient has, and offer treatments such as CPAP, a special oxygen mask used for sleep apnea sufferers. Last year, the center performed about 3,000 sleep studies. The center has been in operation since 1991 and has been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1994.

The center has eight adult beds located at the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute, at 95 Mount Kemble Avenue in Morristown, and four pediatric beds located at the Goryeb Children’s Hospital at 100 Madison Avenue in Morristown. The center is staffed by eight physicians who are board-certified in sleep medicine, and 14 registered sleep technologists, respiratory therapists and nurses.
